7th Annual Awards and Reunion Banquet - 2001
And another Awards and Reunion banquet has come and gone. In short, this year’s banquet was a huge success!!!! There were about
185 people, a smorgasboard of entertainment, awards and appreciation galore, lots of food, and good old fashioned BBI spirit!!
It was an incredible show of BBI enthusiasm, spirit, and fun!!! People came from all over, from Nova Scotia, Sudbury, Montreal
and Ottawa!!! So, after countless hours of negotiation, coordination and teamwork, sleepless nights and relentless soliciting,
the BBI Banquet made for an event that was well worth it! And just so you can prepare for next year, here’s a quick recap.
The evening started out quiet enough with everyone making their way into the hall to place bids on the silent auction items (stuff
like skis, a hammock, games, t-shirts, etc), have a drink, catch up with their summer ship mates, or meet and share stories with
other parents and volunteers. But the tone of the evening soon changed.
Just before dinner, the officers gathered on stage to share with the crowd a sample of this summer’s songs (I suppose these were
sung on the ship). And despite the fact that we couldn’t hear the words or decipher a tune, the singing set the mood for the rest
of the night! Tables had to sing for their supper (and what great sports we had in that crowd – not one table had to go hungry
that night!) Mr. Friis entertained us with an elaborate slide show presentation, set to music, of photos that were taken over
the course of the past summer. The officer’s auction saw good spirited trainees pay to see their officers do crazy thing like
sing (again), dance, do impressions, or work with their co-officer to balance a cup between their noses – you had to be there!!!
We acknowledged all those trainees who had the determination to participate in the program during the 2001 summer session. We
honoured those who surpassed expectations of the norm. We congratulated those who worked hard to move up in the BBI ranks. And,
we thanked those who volunteered their time and/or resources to make this past year a success. Before I go, here’s a list of the
special awards that were given out. Thanks to all of you who helped make this year such a success. We hope you can make it to
next year’s banquet when we celebrate the success of another season. Bye for now. Just several photos of the evening
