Crew Gear Checklist +++++++++++++++++++ To make your adventure as rewarding as possible, you’ll want to ensure that you have the appropriate clothing and accessories. At the time of boarding trainees will have an opportunity to stow their gear in a duffle bag provided by us. Items marked with an asterisk * are available for sale in the Bytown Brigantine Boatique. Standard Gear ============= [ ] Valid Passport or birth certificate (Fair Jeanne only). [ ] Valid Medical Card. [ ] Health insurance information (including out of country coverage if applicable). [ ] Sleeping bag with a removable cotton liner* or bed sheet. [ ] Flashlight with extra batteries and a spare bulb (practical for night watches). [ ] Rigging knife* with lockable jackknife blade, shackle, and marlin spike. [ ] Mess kit including: knife, fork, spoon, plate, bowl, cup/mug (preferably unbreakable i.e. plastic or melmac). [ ] Water bottle*. (Some sort of carrier* is a good idea. Mark your name on it clearly... you wouldn't want anyone else using it, would you?) [ ] Wash kit including: soap, shampoo, towel, toothbrush, toothpaste, hairbrush, and deodorant. [ ] Waterproof sunscreen of at least SPF-15 (you will be outside on the water, proper sunscreen is very important). Recommended Clothing ==================== [ ] 2 pairs of non-skid, non-marking shoes. [ ] Windbreaker. [ ] Rain gear pants* and coat* (pants and jacket are needed because water may come at you from any direction). [ ] 3 pairs of shorts (one navy). [ ] 1 white T-shirt. [ ] 1-2 pair of long trousers. [ ] Short or long sleeved shirts, one for each day of the program. [ ] 1-2 sweaters and/or sweatshirts (preferably wool because it retains heat even when wet). [ ] Enough socks and underwear for each day of the program (a few pairs of wool socks are a good idea because they will keep your feet warm during chilly watches). [ ] Sunglasses with a safety strap (so you don’t lose them overboard). [ ] Fully brimmed hat (as opposed to a baseball type hat) to help protect you from the sun. [ ] Suitable sleep wear (everyone sleeps in bunk beds so night gowns are not appropriate). [ ] Swim suit (one piece for females). [ ] Water shoes (in particular for Black Jack programs). Optional Items ============== [ ] Personal navigation equipment. [ ] Reading book. [ ] Small musical instruments (for ship’s concert or times when you are not on watch). [ ] Camera and film. [ ] A set of smart clothes for when in port. [ ] Notebook and writing equipment. Gear NOT permitted on board ship ================================ X Tobacco (cigarettes, etc.), alcohol, illicit drugs. X Portable radio, walkman, discman, or video games. X Cellular phones. X Hair dryers, curling irons, or electrical shavers. X Junk food of any kind. X Jewelry i.e. earrings, nose ring, bracelets, rings [watches or medical alert bracelets are acceptable]. X Baseball caps. Note: All gear should be labeled with your name. You will be living in close quarters so there will be no room for extra gear! All gear (with the exception of the sleeping bag) must be packed in soft sided bag i.e. duffel bag which we provide, no more than approx 36” long x 14” diameter or 92 cm long x 35 cm diameter, because you will have only about that much space to stow ALL of your gear. If you have any questions about recommended gear, please feel free to contact us at (613) 596-6258 or email info@tallshipsadventure.org This list updated May 2003.
