6th Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser
The 6th Annual BBI Golf Tournament took place on Monday,
September 24 2001, at Loch March Golf and Country Club. We had some 116 golfers
registered, with more people attending for dinner. All participants were given a
Bytown Brigantine Collegiate Cap as a souvenir of the day.
At one o’clock, the cannon shot off and play began. The teams were distributed
amongst the 18 holes and play began. As everyone was completing their ninth
hole, the rain started. Simon and Lynn Fuller were running the "betting
boats", but fortunately were dressed for the weather, especially Lynn! Four
of the smaller ship’s boats were anchored in the lake at hole #13, with a
flag. Each player would attempt to chip their ball from the tee into one of the
boats to win a prize. Four people succeeded and $675.00 was raised up until the
rain put a damper on things.
The majority of golfers retired to the clubhouse, and engaged in conversation
and cards. After about an hour, the rain stopped, and golfers were invited to
golf for a further hour - an offer that was taken up by a few. One tenacious
group from Jacques Whitford managed to complete all 18 holes, and won a prize
for completing the course.
Dinner was moved forward to 6:00 p.m. and over 120 people sat down to a
wonderful meal of salmon, prime rib and chocolate mousse. As usual, the meal at
Loch March was excellent.
Our M.C., Jerry Lowe invited Simon to speak, and he thanked all the people who
attended, donated money and gifts, the Board, volunteers and crews for making
yet another successful year. An estimate was made that some 40 individuals will
be able to attend the program in 2001, supported by the Thomas G. Fuller bursary, who
otherwise would not be able to attend. Simon also stressed the investment all
contributors were making in the youth of this region as well as young people who
travel to Ottawa to join the sail training program.
The prize giving took a long time, due to the incredible amount of prizes to be
awarded. There was a signed jersey from the Ottawa Senators, a signed jersey
from the Ottawa Rebel - the general manager and two of the players attended the
dinner - leather golf bags, senators’ tickets, gift certificates, travel bags,
golf equipment, a CD player, golf shirts from many companies, too many different
items to mention.
It was a truly amazing collection of prizes - a fact that was apparent when the
sales of raffle tickets amounted to over $1,250.00. Simon and Lynn made $675.00
on the betting boats, and half of the players did not reach hole #13.
The final paperwork still has to be done, and we are expecting further
donations, but we think some 115 golfers attended, the number increasing for
dinner. Considering how unfortunate we were with the weather, it was a terrific
group of people supporting Bytown Brigantine.
