7th Annual Golf Tournament Fundraiser

Tiger Woods Autographed BBI Cap Donated to Raise Funds

The 7th Annual BBI Golf Tournament took place on Monday, September 30 2002, at Loch March Golf and Country Club. We had a full house of 144 golfers registered, with more people attending for dinner. All participants were given a business card holder and calculator, engraved with the Bytown Brigantine logo, with the words "Helping youth to reach new heights" as a souvenir of the day.

Due to inclement weather conditions, the start was delayed until 1:30 pm, when the cannon was shot and play began. The teams were spread out between the 18 holes and teed off. A few groups decided after a couple of holes to spend a little "dry" time at the 19th hole before continuing, but completed the course. Visitors to the 13th hole met Simon Fuller, suitably dressed, and set up under an awning, running the "betting boats". Four of the smaller ship's boats were anchored in the lake, with a flag. Each player attempted to chip their ball from the tee into one of the boats to win a prize. A number of people were successful, and received prizes, with over $750.00 raised for the Bursary.

From about 3:00 pm, the weather changed, and it became a lovely fall day, with the sun shining, birds singing, and new hazards on the course in the form of a group of some 5 deer, who did not seem inclined to move, as well as baby racoons, and Canada geese. A hole in one prize of $10,000.00, donated by Smith Petrie Carr was not claimed unfortunately, or the two year lease on a Hyundai Sante Fe, courtesy of West End Hyundai, or the golf bag, sponsored by Molsons. Of course, according to several players, they were "really close"!

Due to the later start, most teams finished between 6:30 and 7:00pm, and retired to the clubhouse, for cocktails before going up to the dining room.

Dinner was served to over 150 people, enjoying soup, grilled strip loin steak, and apple pie, accompanied by wine. Yet another wonderful meal served at Loch March! Donations from Hersheys included mint patties and kisses, which were placed on every table, and disappeared quite quickly. Before dinner, a raffle ticket had been left at every place setting, and during the meal, a number of raffle prizes were awarded.

Our M.C., Jerry Lowe invited Simon to speak, and he thanked all the people who attended, donated money and gifts, the Board, volunteers and crews for making yet another successful year. Some 40 individuals will be able to attend the programme in 2003, supported by the Thomas G. Fuller bursary, that otherwise would not be able to participate. Simon also stressed the tangible investment all contributors were making in the youth of this region as well as young people who travel to Ottawa to join the sail training programme.

The raffle took a long time, due to the incredible amount of prizes donated by sponsors, and acquired by Jerry.

There were 2 signed jerseys from the Ottawa Senators, 2 signed jerseys from the Ottawa Renegade, golf bags, senators' tickets, gift certificates, travel bags, golf equipment, a CD player, golf shirts, balls, - too many different items to mention.

The last prize to be raffled was a Bytown Brigantine cap, signed by Tiger Woods, and authenticated by the donor, Ray Dumouchel, who obtained it two weeks after last year's tournament when he was in Florida.

He met Tiger Woods by chance, and mentioned to him that he had attended the golf tournament, and was planning to again next year, and explained a little about the programme, and the benefits for youth in the area. He also said that the cap was the only thing he had for Tiger to write on. It was the only autograph given that day, so he was very fortunate, as were Bytown in having this donated. Sales of raffle tickets amounted to over $1,550.00 as everyone wanted to win this.
