8th Annual Golf Tournament 2003
On Monday, September 29 2003, Bytown Brigantine held its 8th Annual Golf
Tournament at Loch March Golf and Country Club.
Participants registering were given this year’s gift: a navy golf umbrella with the Bytown logo in gold. Regular attendees will recall that the last two years have been rather wet, however we were blessed with good weather this year - although there was a brief, light shower, which lasted about 10 minutes. We hope that everyone attending will get good use out of their umbrella, not just for golfing!

With a record 146 golfers, the cannon sounded, and the golfing started.
There were many hole-in-one prizes:
- Hole #2 offered a 3-day vacation from Molsons;
- Hole #7 - $10,000.00 from Petrela Burns;
- Hole #13 - a one-year lease on a Hyundai Elantra from Michael Davies
- Hole #16 - a Cadillac GST (valued at $48,000.00) from Reid Brothers in Arnprior. This vehicle was to keep, not just a lease!
Hole #2 also was the site of the chipping contest, which was administered by Molsons. Participants had to chip a ball into a target, and this proved very popular as well as frustrating.
Hole #13 was the site again of the betting boats, administered by Simon Fuller. Four of the smaller ship’s boats were anchored in the lake, with a flag. Each player attempted to chip their ball from the tee into one of the boats to win a prize. This year an additional challenge was to shoot into a moving target, as the wind was so strong, the anchors would not hold the boats. A number of people were successful, and received prizes, with over $900.00 raised for the Bursary. We would like to thank everyone for their support, and hope they had fun with it.
All teams finished and enjoyed cocktails before going upstairs. Before dinner, a golf bag and an Adirondack chair were “Early Bird” raffle prizes.
Dinner was served to over 150 people, enjoying Cream of Tomato Soup, Prime Rib and Apple Pie with Ice Cream, accompanied by red and white wine, tea and coffee - another great meal served at Loch March! Donations from Hersheys included mint patties and kisses, which were placed on every table, and disappeared quite quickly.
We were most fortunate to have had the help of Jerry Lowe again this year, who is responsible for obtaining some wonderful prizes from local organisations.
Simon took the dais and welcomed everyone. He spoke about what the vessels had been doing this year, including participation by the Fair Jeanne in the Tall Ships Challenge 2003 through the Great Lakes, field trips by trainees from schools and church groups, and the Elderhostel group’s continued programme. Sail training appeals to increasing numbers of people from all walks of life, and a love of the sea is not limited by your age. Bytown Brigantine has trainees from ages 12 - 75 (or maybe older!).
Simon thanked all the supporters of the Golf Tournament for attending, and donating prizes and money, to enable the Thomas G. Fuller Bursary to continue to offer sail training to youth. As many as one in five of the attendees of our summer programmes are supported by the Bursary, and would not otherwise be able to attend.
Many of the attendees at this golf day have supported the tournament every year, and by bringing new guests with them, expand the reach of awareness of what the programme represents.
The quick wit of Jerry and Hughie entertained the group, as the many raffle prizes were distributed. We are very fortunate to receive so many wonderful prizes, which make the raffle so successful.
A digital camera was donated by Lafarge, as well as golf jackets; Molsons kindly gave a number of prizes, including golf shirts, sports bags, and a beer fridge. Pepsi gave an air hockey table, golf shirts and sports bags. Bill and Trish Fuller donated a framed, autographed photograph of Tiger Woods putting the green Masters jacket on Mike Weir, which was highly sought after.
Thank you once again for a very successful tournament.
