9th Annual Golf Tournament 2004

On Monday, September 27, 2004, Bytown Brigantine held its 9th Annual Golf Tournament at Loch March Golf and Country Club. It seems hard to believe that we have held so many tournaments – some of our players have been at every one! All the silent prayers were answered, and the weather was amazing – blue skies, no rain and hot!

Participants registering were given this year’s gift: a brass-coloured compass in a presentation box – for those who may get lost on the course!

See all the pictures from the 2004 Golf Tournament off of the photos page.

Again, we had 146 golfers who went to their assigned holes, and when the cannon sounded, they started.

There were many hole-in-one prizes:

  • Hole #2 offered a golf bag from Molsons;
  • Hole #7 - $10,000.00 from Petrela Burns;
  • Hole #16 - a Pontias from Reid Brothers in Arnprior. This vehicle was to keep, not just a lease!

Hole #13 was the site again of the betting boats, administered by Simon’s wife Lynn Fuller, ably assisted by Jim Rahn. Four of the smaller ship’s boats were anchored in the lake, with a flag. Each player attempted to chip their ball from the tee into one of the boats to win a prize. Apparently only one person was successful in getting their ball into a boat – Cathy McPhee who played with Am-Tech Electric. Jim and Lynn raised over $1,100 for the Bursary with over $900.00 raised for the Bursary. We would like to thank everyone for their support, and hope they had fun with it.

All teams finished and enjoyed cocktails before going upstairs. Dinner was served to over 160 people, enjoying Cream of Butternut Squash and Apple Soup, Stuffed Roast Pork and Cheesecake served with berries, accompanied by red and white wine, tea and coffee - another great meal served at Loch March! Donations from Hersheys included mint patties, nuggets and kisses, which were placed on every table, and disappeared quite quickly.

We were most fortunate to have had the help of Jerry Lowe again this year, who is responsible for obtaining many wonderful prizes from local organizations and sponsors, such as Molsons and Lafarge.

Board of Directors’ Steve Gauthier was the MC, and he introduced Simon, who took the dais and welcomed everyone. He spoke about what the vessels had been doing this year, including participation by the Fair Jeanne in Sea Cadet sail training, field trips by trainees from schools and church groups, and the Elderhostel group’s continued programme, as well as the celebrations of Black Jack’s 100 years of service.

A short video was then shown of preparation on Black Jack, leading up to the re-christening by Her Excellency Adrienne Clarkson, Governor General of Canada, who agreed to be named Honourary Patron of Bytown Brigantine. A proclamation from the City of Ottawa names Black Jack as “Ottawa’s Signature Vessel”.

Simon thanked all the supporters of the Golf Tournament for attending, and donating prizes and money, to enable the Thomas G. Fuller Bursary to continue to offer sail training to youth. As many as one in five of the attendees of our summer programmes are supported by the Bursary, and would not otherwise be able to attend.

Many of the attendees at this golf day have supported the tournament every year, and by bringing new guests with them, expand the reach of awareness of what the programme represents.

Jerry arranged a Chinese Auction type raffle to distribute the numerous prizes, which included a Corona Ice Chest, golf bag, sports bags, golfshirts, baseball hats and bottle carriers from Molsons; a bicycle, sports bags from Lafarge; television with integrated DVD player from ASAP Print Management, complete detailing package for your vehicle, courtesy of Gary Fritsch, shirts, golf balls and gift certificates from Sapacon, glass tankards, pocket watch, shirt and cap from Vipond, dinner certificates from Aramark, as well as gifts from St Paul Guarantee, Litemore, United Rentals, Lyreco. We are very fortunate to receive so many wonderful prizes, which make the raffle so successful.

Thank you once again for a very successful tournament
