10th Annual Golf Tournament 2005
On Monday, September 26 2005, Bytown Brigantine held its 10th Annual Golf Tournament at Loch March Golf and Country Club. Ten
years of tournaments is an amazing achievement and we would like to thank everyone who has joined us over these last years, especially
the players and donors who have participated in every one!
Due to an exceedingly active hurricane season this year, we did not escape unscathed from the weather. However, as Canadians
we have great fortitude and refuse to let a little damp discourage us, so the tournament proceeded. We were actually very lucky,
and the only downpour happened halfway through the course. In the Clubhouse, Dominic Darcy was performing, and some of our players
spent an enjoyable afternoon listening to him, singing along, and playing cards. The majority of players forged ahead, with a
number of groups posting amazingly high scores, given the soggy greens!
Participants registering were given this year’s gift: a bridge set including two decks of Bytown Brigantine cards, which
featured volunteers, crew and supporters from the last 20 years as well as pictures of the two vessels. (See all the pictures from
the Golf Tournament on the photos page).
A record 153 players were registered and most refused to allow the weather to dampen their spirits. The hole-in-one prizes included:
- Hole #2 offered a golf bag from Molsons;
- Hole #7 - $10,000.00 from Petrela Burns;
- Hole #16 - a Cadillac from Reid Brothers in Arnprior. This vehicle was to keep, not just a lease!
Hole #13 is the usual site of the betting boats, but due to a concern with conditions, it was decided not to set these up for
this year. However, there were other events around the course, including a feast of fruit provided by McCartney Farms, the chipping
barrel and the marshmallow wedge.
All teams either finished or went to enjoy the music and company in the Clubhouse, and at 7 p.m., after cocktails, went upstairs.
Thanks to the volunteers and Board members who decorated the room so beautifully. Dinner was served to over 160 people, enjoying
Cream of Butternut Squash and Apple Soup, Prime Rib, and Apple Pie a la Mode, accompanied by red and white wine, tea and coffee
- another great meal served at Loch March! Donations from Hersheys included mint patties, nuggets and kisses, which were placed
on every table, and disappeared just as quickly!
Our MC this year was James Hendrix from A Channel News who was very enthusiastic about the programme. He spoke about his childhood
experiences with sailing and offered his support for upcoming events for Bytown, and offered his services next year. He then introduced
Simon Fuller, President of the Foundation.
Simon updated our guests on what Bytown Brigantine has been doing over the past year and introduced our new Foundation Manager,
Rick Ladouceur, who joined us in April. Simon thanked Rick for all his hard work and organisation of the tournament. He also mentioned
that in 10 years, the proceeds from the golf tournaments add up to approximately a quarter of a million dollars, and the funds
have provided berths for some 300 trainees who otherwise would not have been able to attend. Simon thanked all the supporters
of the Golf Tournament for attending, and donating prizes and money, to enable the Thomas G. Fuller Bursary to continue to offer
sail training to youth.
Jerry Lowe helped us again this year, and obtained some great prizes from Molsons, who have been terrific supporters of the tournament
every year. Our guests were then invited to open one of the decks of cards, and all at the table picked a card. Prizes were awarded
for the highest card drawn at each table, and a prize went out to the lowest as well. James then started the raffle, and Mrs Fuller,
our Patron, drew the first name. Some of the prizes available were:
- $500.00 gift certificate to Golf Town, from Petrela Burns
- Nike golf bag from Litemore
- Playstation 2 from Lafarge
- Weed Wacker from Sapacon
- Wine cooler from Quelmec Adjusters
- 3 sets of tickets to games from the Ottawa Senators
- Meal and game package at the Penalty Box and the same from Frank Finnegans from Aramark
Also, there was a 27" flat screen TV, 2 portable DVD players, 2 water coolers, a ghetto blaster, table air hockey game, deluxe
pressure washer, golf bags, putters, polisher/sander, BBQ tools, Senators tickets, restaurant gift certificates, Ottawa 67's tickets,
golf jackets, chocolate baskets . . . . the gifts were too numerous to mention all of them. Thank you to everyone!
James was ably helped by Lynn Fuller, Diana Fuller and Tammy Ball, who support the tournament every year. Jerry Lowe was the winner
of the Weed Wacker but put it back into the raffle, and an auction was held for it. The winner was Gary Fritsch and we thank him
for his “additional contribution”.
We would also like to thank Loch March, who donated the tournament costs - green fees, carts, lunch and dinner to the Thomas G.
Fuller Bursary.
Thank you everyone for attending, donating and helping, and we look forward to seeing you next year on Monday September 25 2006.
On Monday, September 27, 2004, Bytown Brigantine held its 9th Annual Golf Tournament at Loch March Golf and Country Club. It seems
hard to believe that we have held so many tournaments – some of our players have been at every one!
