The Lore of Sail

A Book Review

Because this book came out so long ago (1982), you probably won't see it in most bookstores. But if you do come across a copy ... GRAB IT!

This book features drawings with different parts of the tallship rigging and sails annotated. Unfortunately it doesn't tell a lot about how to get the sails up and set (that takes many other volumes). It is, however, a very handy pocketbook size that you can toss in your ditty bag and pull out to help study for your Sail and Rigging Terms item in your Trainee Logbook.

The Lore of Sail has four sections: The Hull, Spars and Rigging, The Sail, and Navigation and Ship Handling. Each section has a respectable, if brief, amount of text to introduce the contents and give a good overview of some history and evolution of the various parts. In contrast to the brief amount of text, this book offers a wealth of simple line drawings of everything from anchors to yachts.

Even though this book is only 256 pages, because a picture is worth a thousand words, if Baker had written out what is so nicely depicted and described with simple captions, this book would have been thousands of pages long. As it is, the pictures do an admirable job of showing through the clutter in the rigging and focusing on just a few details at a time. There are a few pictures where all the details are shown in all their glory, but then there are exploded and smaller detail drawings where the intricacies of the detail become clear.
