Nautical Interest
Nautical Terms
Check out the nautical terms database that is now online. It is a work in progress, and
is currently missing quite a few definitions, but it is a start.
Books
The glory days of sail are long past, but there is a wealth of information on the age of sail in book
form out there. This is one way the glory is being kept alive. (The other of course is through youth
sail training programs such as Bytown Brigantine runs.) I've come across some really interesting books related to tall ships
and seamanship and just collected some notes on them here. I hope you find them useful. If you do, please drop me a line, or,
if you know of other books or resources you'd like to share, pass them along, and I'll put them up here too.
Where to Find Nautical Books
Lee Valley Tools
If you are on their mailing list you will receive in themail, or if you are near one of their stores,
you can pickup their "Woodworking and Gerdening Books" catalogue. Or, if you would rather browse their selection of
books they have a very good online storefront. Go to www.leevalley.com and navigate your
way into the Classic Reprints listing of
books under the woodworking section.
Confused by all the nautical jargon? They've got a Sailor's
Word Book. Want to know more about sailing ships? They've got Sailing
Ships at a Glance. Or how about getting the budding sailor on your Christmas list a copy of Manual
of Seamanship for Boys and Seamen of the Royal Navy 1904? Know somebody who is into building models of sailing ships? They
could probably use a copy of The
Young Sea Officer's Sheet Anchor that shows how all the rigging goes together.
The Nautical Mind
If you are into something racier, or more modern, then The Nautical Mind at www.nauticalmind.com is the site you will want to check out. If there is a book with a nautical subject, chances are they've got it, or can get it.
They might seem a bit pricey (you have to expect that in a specialty bookstore) so you may want to check out their bargains. For
instance, they've got a good deal on The
Way of a Ship: A Square-Rigger Voyage in the Last Days of Sail, a really good book about what it must have been like to crew
on the square-riggers going around Cape Horn at the end of the 19th century.
