We're Hiring Captains for Summer 2021!

Do you hold your Master 150 or 60 and have always wanted to learn to sail? Then Bytown Brigantine, Tall Ships Adventure might be the place for you!

We are one of Canada's top leadership training programs aboard a Tall Ship and one of the best to work if you are someone who has a passion for Canada's maritime life and wants to make a profound difference in the lives of young people.

SV Fair Jeanne Captain (Master 150) 

General Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the President, the Master is responsible for the vessel's operation and safety, her crew, trainees and gear, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, governing authorities, and Bytown Brigantine Standing Orders. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintains such records, logs or produces such reports as may be required for the smooth, efficient and compliant operation of the vessel and program;

  • Fostering and promoting an environment conducive to achieving a rewarding and character-building experience for the trainees;

  • Cooperates with and encourages volunteer participation;

  • Acts as host/ambassador for the foundation/program when carrying out the above.

Qualifications

  • Master 150 GT Domestic or equal/greater international certification

  • Experience and interest in working with youth in a leadership capacity

  • Some familiarization with TP 33313E (Transport Canada Standard Relating to Design, Construction and Operational Safety of Sail Training Vessels), or willingness to learn

  • Willing to complete a Police Records Check for work with the vulnerable sector

Black Jack Captain (Master 60)

General Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the President of the Foundation and working closely with the Executive Director, the Master is responsible for the operation and safety of the vessel, her crew, trainees and gear, in compliance with applicable laws and regulations, governing authorities and Bytown Brigantine Standing Orders. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Maintains such records, logs or produces such reports as may be required for the smooth, efficient and compliant operation of the vessel and program;

  • Instructs demonstrates and leads by example Bytown’s sail training curriculum, for the benefit of all trainees;

  • Carries out the objectives of the foundation aboard ship while fostering and promoting an environment conducive to achieving a rewarding and character-building experience for the trainees;

  • Leads and carries out such other duties aboard ship, or on land, consistent with the required elements of operating a non-profit, charitable, sail training program;

  • Cooperates with and encourages volunteer participation in program activities, operations, shipyards, etc.;

  • Acts as host/ambassador for the foundation/program when carrying out the above.

Qualifications

  • Master < 60 GT Domestic

  • Sail training experience and/or sail endorsement

  • Experience and interest in working with youth in a leadership capacity

  • Some familiarization with TP 33313E (Transport Canada Standard Relating to Design, Construction and Operational Safety of Sail Training Vessels), or willingness to learn

  • Willing to complete a Police Records Check for work with the vulnerable sector
